£1000 would be hugely beneficial to the club.

Three of our boats are currently in repair at the moment and we have been informed that more work is needed than we initially thought. £1000 would help us to repair these boats so that they are in a working condition for the foreseeable future so that club members now and in the future will benefit from the boats.

Note from Annette: Initially the Boat Club had applied for £5000 for new sails for their fleet. (see below). However, on dicussion with them I asked whether a smaller grant would be useful as £5,000 was not likely to be granted.

The University of Reading Sailing and Windsurfing club would like to apply for a grant to cover the cost of new sails for our team racing Fireflies.

The club have recently purchased 3 new rudders with the view of purchasing 3 more next year to restore our boats.  Part of this vital restoration process is to buy new sails.

New sails would benefit the club greatly as it means more people will be able to train and sail together at the same time, enhancing the sailing experience of our members.  New sails would allow our teams to train competitively for events and help for Reading University to be more well known as a university with sailing teams.

Our current sails are on their last legs due to wear and tear and a good set of sails is vital to the continuation of the society.

As a club we look after our equipment and use our sails weekly during training.  This year we have a bigger membership and due to this, we have increased wear and tear more so than we had anticipated.  Sails last the sailing club several years and the current sails have been in our possession since before the committee joined the club.  A new set of sails would last the club about 10 years and would enable the club to keep running.

We run our annual event where we generate all our money for the year.  This requires the sails on the boats to be ‘matched’ so all sails have to be in an identical state.

We are currently in the process of finalising the cost with a sail makers but we anticipate the cost being in the region of £5000 for six new main sails and jibs.
