Dear Friends committee,

The Ure Museum would like to apply for £327.95 to redisplay our bronze sculpted head of Percy Ure (2019.5.1 https://uremuseum.org/cgi-bin/uredb.cgi?rec=2019.5.1)

In 2019, the family of Percy (the first professor of Classics) and Annie Ure (the first curator of the museum) gifted us with a beautiful bronze sculpted head of Percy Ure. It was made by Jannis Athene c.1940 and exhibited at the 13th annual exhibition of the Reading Guild of Artists (RGA) in 1943.

The bronze head is currently on display in the entrance to the Ure Museum in a temporary display case (photo attached) but we would like to have it mounted on a permanent plinth with Perspex hood. This would be in keeping with other works of art on display in the museum and the adjacent corridor (one example in picture attached). As the museum is open to both the public and university members we feel displaying the bronze head would fit in with the friends grant hoping to enhance university-community relations, by showcasing the long links with the department and the local art community.

The plinth and mounting of the bust would be done by UMASCS’s conservator Fred van de Geer.

Costs are:

Perspex case                                 £160

Material for plinth                      £125

Paint for plinth                             £ 22.95

Engraved acknowledgment   £20

Total                                                 £327.95

Thank you for taking the time to consider this application.

Best wishes,

Jayne
