This is the third and final trip to the Arcadian Thames and will include visits to Syon House and gardens and to Boston Manor.
Syon House is the spectacular London home of the Duke of Northumberland. The house was built in the sixteenth century on the site of the Medieval Syon Abbey and came to the family of the present owners in 1594. In the eighteenth century, Robert Adam converted the interior of the house into one of the finest neo-classical interiors in the country, turning an old house into the most modern and fashionable in the London countryside. With its riverside setting, it was a flag waver for the idea of an Arcadian Thameside landscape
The gardens date back to the time of the Abbey. Entry for a group tour is £16.50 for under 65s and £15.00 for those over 65.
Boston Manor is a Jacobean House built for Lady Mary Reade in 1623 and later owned by the Clitherow family from the 1670s until the 1920s. The beautifully restored historic interiors, including breathtaking original ornate plasterwork, are joined by two community exhibition galleries, meeting rooms and an attractive modern café. Entry is free.
The tour involves a fair amount of walking so would not be suitable for less mobile members.
The cost of the trip will be £36, plus the admission charge for Syon House of either £15.00 (or £16.50 if under 65), payable with the booking.
